HEMOLYTIC ANEMIA DUE TO INTRINSIC ABNORMALITIES OF THE RED BLOOD CELL
Abstract
An intrinsic abnormality of the red cellor hemoglobin, or both, includes a large variety of hereditary hemolytic diseases.
They embrace hereditary spherocytosis, hereditary elliptocytosis, hereditary nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia, Cooley¢¥s anemia, Sickle cell anemia, and many of the hereditary drug-induced hemolytic anemia. These erythrocytic abnormalities differ from each other morphologically. Genetic patterns also serve as diagnostic aids.
Hemolysis may be due to defects in the two factors which normally maintain the integrity of the red cell-its metabolic abnormalities and physical structure. The metabolic abnormalities include a deficiency of enzymes such as glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase pyruvate kinase and trisephosphate isomerase.
